Work Packages No 1: Management
WP leader: UniKassel
WP partners: NTEC, UPdM, IFSTTAR, VTI
For ensuring to reach the aimed project results, management and coordination of the project are concentrated in WP 1. Besides the administrative needs in order to forward information between CEDR/PEB and project partners, the quality assurance in terms of content of achieved research results within the technical WPs as well as timing is located in WP1.
Work Packages No 2: Learning from existing CRM structures
WP leader: VTI
WP partners: UniKassel, NTEC, UPdM, IFSTTAR
Assess long-term performance of CR pavements in various climatic conditions and link the performance to available data on
1. RA material properties and mixture design
2. structure
3. traffic & climate
It is aimed to assess at least 15 CRM sites (≥ 3 per partner) in CRABforOERE partner countries and neighbouring CEDR members.
Work Packages No 3: RA qualification für use in CRM
WP leader: UPdM
WP partners: UniKassel, NTEC, IFSTTAR, VTI
- To propose a framework for specifying the properties of RA aggregate, finalized to its use in CRM for road construction
- To validate and if necessary adapt routine test methods to RA as aggregate in CRM
- To compare the properties of RA aggregates available in different European countries.
Work Packages No 4: CRM Mix design
WP leader: IFSTTAR
WP partners: UniKassel, VTI, UNIVPM, NTEC
- propose of harmonised mix design procedure
- Mix design proposal for the demonstration sites (WP 6)
- To provide detailed instructions for manufacturing and testing cold asphalt mixtures
Work Packages No 5: CRM Pavement Design
WP leader: UniKassel
WP partners: VTI, IFSTTAR, UNIVPM
Depending of the content of bituminous and mineral binders as well as the properties of RA aggregates applied within CRM, the performance of the resulting layer ranges between the properties of unbound, asphalt (flexible) or hydraulically bound (stiff) courses. Therefore, different failure modes (shrinkage cracking, fatigue cracking, rutting) should be considered during pavement design. In order to achieve a proposed harmonised methodology, following objectives has to be reached:
- Identify relevant failure modes for varied CRM mix designs and propose calculation tools to be applicable failure verification models
- Validate pavement design tools on assessed CRM structures (WP 2)
- Draft simple empirical pavement design catalogues for CRM structures
Work Packages No 6: Construction and short-term assessment of demonstration CRM-pavements
WP partners: UniKassel, IFSTTAR, VTI
- demonstration of the applicability of the proposed CR technique
- validation of the mixture and structural design procedures developed in WP4 and WP5
- Assessment of the short-term behaviour of the CRM structure, with particular attention to the curing process in varied climatic conditions
Work Packages No 7: Sustainable Assessment
WP leader: NTEC
WP partners: UniKassel, IFSTTAR, VTI, UPdM
- understanding the environmental and health impacts of the possible use of 100% cold recycled asphalt mixes for base courses at European level.
- comparative sustainability assessment with alternative disposal routes and alternative construction methods, namely use of virgin materials to build bituminous bound layers, use of Hot Mix process and different pavement structures. The comparison will be carried out on the basis of real case studies representative of the European level of the investigation
Work Packages No 8: Dissemination & Knowledge Tranfer
WP leader: UniKassel
WP partners: NTEC, UPdM, IFSTTAR, VTI
In order to inform the interested technical public about the projects content and progress as well as interim and final results, the dissemination tasks are summarised in WP 8.
